10 tips to grow your TikTok following

There is no one way to grow your following on TikTok, but there are strategies that you can take advantage of that work well with this new 2023 algorithm.
First, let's start with what we already know:
TikTok is a great platform to connect with your target audience especially if they include Gen Z and millennial markets.
TikTok has over 138 million monthly active users in the United States, and more than 1 billion users worldwide.
TikTok is only getting more and more popular.
TikTok values authenticity and community.
So, if you want to succeed on TikTok, you need to understand how it's algorithm works so you can use it to increase your brand awareness. Similar to other social media platforms, the algorithm changes often. So, the first five tips we share with you will be applicable to the lifetime of your account, and the last five tips will specifically apply to the new 2023 algorithm.
1. Identify Your Brand and Content
Before you do anything, you should understand why you are creating a TikTok, and what kind of content creator you want to be. If you are aiming to be an influencer, UGC content creator, or just want to create as a business, you need to have an understanding of what topics you want to cover. @themrspederson has a great video on her TikTok account that is all about mapping out content topics for the year.
2. Produce Quality Videos
I want to clear up any misconceptions here. A quality video on TikTok does NOT mean a curated commercial. As I mentioned previously, TikTok thrives on authenticity, and if your videos feel too scripted or "salesly" they are less likely to do well. Instead, I recommend just finding yourself some decent lighting, in an area where there isn't a lot of background noise, and filming your idea there.
3. Understand Your Target Audience
In general TikTok is a platform that many people use to wind down. So they tend to enjoy entertaining content, or content that brings value to their life. Depending on your specific audience, this can look like vlogging, educational videos, life hacks, funny videos etc. As you post more on your channel, you will be able to see your analytics and determine what content performs best based on your specific audience using Tik-Tok's Creator or Business Portal.
4. Stay Up-to-date on Trending Content
Tiktok pushes out trending content in order to stay relevant. This is great for you, because you can piggy-back off already trending videos. If you notice a trending sound, challenge, or hashtag see if you can make it relevant to your niche and jump in on it.
5. Engage with others
Again, TikTok values community. Therefore, as a content creator this means you should interact with other accounts as much as you can and establish a community around your niche.

2023 Specific Algorithm Tips to Help You Grow Your TikTok
Algorithms change frequently, and there have been some major TikTok algorithm changes since 2022. So I have put together some hacks to help you grow your TikTok channel in 2023.
1. SEO
TikTok is becoming more and more like a search engine where a user can type in key words to search for a video. This is important to know because this means that in order to be found when a user searches for a topic, TikTok has to associate the key words with your specific video. This is an example I created using the term "Valentine's Day":

When I searched for this term, I was able to find the top trending videos with the matching hashtags of my search content. On top of this I was also able to see terms that others have searched for in relation to my search such as "Valentine's Day Messages".
For this reason, it is important to keep SEO in mind when creating the copy, and audio for your videos.
2. Hashtag Strategy
There is a popular 3x3x3 strategy in use right now that was created by @themrspederson that teaches others how to optimize the hashtags on their videos. This video by @sellanythingonline explains the concept well.
3. Implement Jump Cuts
Instead of having long sections of video in each TikTok you create, cut the video up once every couple of seconds to create jump cuts. This works especially well for vlog style videos.
4. Short Video Content
Right now shorter video content is doing best, so consider creating some 10-20 second long videos with a good hook. Remember to work smarter and not harder when it comes to filming your shots.
5. Carousels
Similar to Instagram Carousels, TikTok launched a new option to create slideshows instead of video.I expect this trend to stay popular for a while, and you can use it for so many things like giving advice, sharing new products, introducing your team etc.
These are just some of the many ways that you can gain more followers on TikTok, but don't feel discouraged if it seems like to much all at one time. Take it day by day, and it will begin to feel simple.
